The SIE exam costs $100 as of 2026. That is the FINRA fee for one attempt, and it is the only fee you have to pay to sit the exam.
Your real total is usually higher. Study materials cost money, and every retake costs another $100 plus a waiting period. A candidate who passes on the first attempt with free materials spends $100. A candidate who fails twice and buys a course can spend several times that.
The good news is that the biggest saving is under your control. Passing the first time is worth more than any discount on a study package.
What the $100 fee covers
The fee buys you one scheduled attempt at the SIE exam. That attempt gives you:
- 80 questions in total: 75 scored questions plus 5 unscored pretest questions.
- 1 hour 45 minutes of testing time.
- Four answer choices per question, with no penalty for guessing. A wrong answer costs you nothing, so answer every question.
- A score against a passing standard of 70, reported as an equated score.
- A result that stays valid for 4 years if you pass.
You can take the exam at a Prometric test center or online with remote proctoring. You also do not need a firm to sponsor you. Anyone 18 or older can enroll and pay the fee, which means you can pass the SIE before you have a job in the industry.
FINRA publishes the current fee on its own SIE exam page. Fees change, so check there before you book. For the enrollment steps, see how to register for the SIE exam, and for the test-day routine, see what to expect on SIE exam day.
Costs the fee does not cover
Three costs sit outside the $100:
- Study materials. Books, courses, question banks, and apps are all separate purchases.
- Retakes. Each new attempt is a new $100 fee.
- Your top-off exam. The SIE is a qualification exam. Passing it alone does not register or license you. You still need a firm sponsor plus a top-off exam such as the Series 6 or Series 7, and that exam carries its own fee.
If you are unclear on how the SIE fits with the rest of registration, read what the SIE license actually is and SIE vs Series 7.
What a retake really costs
There is no discounted retake. You pay the full fee again, and you wait before you can sit again. The waits get much longer after a third failure.
| Attempt | Fee | Total paid | Wait before your next attempt |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st, failed | $100 | $100 | 30 days |
| 2nd, failed | $100 | $200 | 30 days |
| 3rd, failed | $100 | $300 | 180 days |
| 4th, failed | $100 | $400 | 180 days |
The 180-day wait applies to a third or later failed attempt within a two-year period. As of August 2026, the 30-day and 180-day waits are the rules in force. FINRA has approved shorter waits and will announce the start date, so check finra.org before you plan a retake around a specific date.
A third failure costs you more time than money. It pushes your next attempt roughly six months out. If a job offer or a start date depends on passing, that delay costs far more than the $400 in fees. What happens if you fail the SIE covers the process in full, and the SIE pass rate page explains what the passing standard means.
What prep costs
Prep is where budgets vary the most. Every path below can get you to a pass, so pick the one that matches how you learn and what you can spend.
| Prep path | What you get | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Free self-study | FINRA's content outline, free lessons, free practice questions | $0 |
| App or online question bank | Practice questions, timed mock exams, progress tracking | Low weekly or one-time fee |
| Instructor-led course | Live or recorded classes, an instructor to ask, longer support | Highest, and it varies by provider |
Free study works for people with a finance background or strong self-discipline. FINRA's content outline is free and tells you exactly what the exam covers. Our own free SIE course runs to 30 lessons. You can also take a free SIE practice test without paying anything, or work through the free practice tests directory.
A question bank is the middle path. It costs far less than a course and gives you the repeated question practice that moves a score. SIE Exam Ready costs $9.99 a week or $79.99 for lifetime access, which gives you all 750 practice questions and the full mock exams.
Instructor-led courses cost the most, and they earn it for some people. Live classes give you someone to ask when a concept will not stick, which a question bank cannot do. Provider prices change often and run promotions, so check the provider's own site for the current price rather than trusting a comparison table. Three sample budgets
Each total below assumes you pass on the first attempt.
| Budget | Exam fee | Prep | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free path | $100 | $0 | $100 |
| App path, lifetime access | $100 | $79.99 | $179.99 |
| Course path | $100 | Provider price | $100 plus the provider price |
Add $100 to any row for each retake. That single line is the reason spending something on prep usually costs less than spending nothing.
How to keep your total near $100
Four habits do most of the work:
- Study to the published weights. Understanding Products and Their Risks is 44% of the scored questions, or 33 of the 75. Trading, Customer Accounts and Prohibited Activities is 31%. Give those two sections the most time.
- Use free material first. Work the free lessons and free questions before you buy anything. You may not need to buy at all.
- Sit a full timed mock before you book. A timed run under real conditions tells you far more than a chapter quiz.
- Book only when your scores hold steady. Booking early to create pressure is an expensive way to motivate yourself. Every premature booking risks another $100 and a 30-day wait.
For a week-by-week plan, see how to study for the SIE exam and our SIE study guide. If you want a sense of what you are up against first, read how hard the SIE exam is.
Is the SIE worth $100?
For most people entering the securities industry, yes. A pass stays valid for 4 years, and you can sit the exam before any firm hires you. That lets you walk into interviews with the first qualification already done.
Just keep the limits in view. The SIE is one half of registration. You still need a sponsoring firm and a top-off exam before you can do the job. Budget the $100 as the first step of a longer process, not the whole cost of getting registered.
Fees and rules change. The figures on this page are current as of August 2026, so confirm the fee and the retake waits on finra.org before you book.
